He manoeuvred her to the banister that overlooked the entrance hall and let go. She stood hugging herself, doing her level best to shut out the world and the truth of what happened. ‘You found Private Corey’ the Ministry Man said. Her head jerked of its own volition, as if her mind were no longer in control. ‘And you found him in there?’ Emma glanced at the door to Corey’s room, and nodded again. ‘Can you tell me what happened?’ Eor a long time she said nothing. Then she was as surprised as anyone to hear her own voice, a disconnected sound as if someone else were telling him the story. ‘I came from the kitchen,’ the voice told the Ministry Man. ‘I’d been looking for Daniel all night. He wasn’t in his room. Then I found him -’ The sound of her voice cut abruptly. ‘What time was that?’ Shrug. ‘Eour? Quarter past?’ ‘And there was no one else about?’ Her head shook. ‘You didn’t hear anyone about just before you came up here?’ Shake. ‘And you hadn’t heard a shot?’ Shake. ‘Thank you. Miss Braithwaite. I’m sorry I had to ask you all that.’ She felt Dr Banham’s hand again on her arm, and the stairs arrived below her feet. She moved down with a slow, mesmerising rhythm, until the stairs began to lift themselves from under her and float about with a disconcerting fluidity. They swept up past her and the world was sucked briskly down a black plughole in the depths of her head.
